What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a technique that uses very thin needles to elicit the body’s natural healing and repairing responses. For example, it is used to treat muscle pain and discomfort by stimulating points on the body to relax a ‘tight’ muscle while it activates a ‘weak’ muscle. Another example of how Acupuncture works is through its ability to reduce inflammation and stimulate our immune system. This is accomplished through regulating the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism of the nervous system. The ‘fight or flight’ mechanism refers to the two systems that determine whether we are in an excitable mode (‘fight’) or in a relaxed mode (‘flight’) – the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system, respectively. In a healthy body, both systems work in a well orchestrated manner – when we are rushing through traffic and require focused attention, the sympathetic system is dominant; in contrast, when we are having an enjoyable dinner with friends, the parasympathetic system is dominant. Each system serves a purpose: the sympathetic system provides focused attention while the parasympathetic system provides the ability to recover and heal. Acupuncture is an effective technique that can regulate both systems when appropriate.
What is Electro-Acupuncture?
Electro-Acupuncture is a technique that uses low levels of electric current transmitted through a pair of acupuncture needles. Specific frequencies elicit a desired neurological and/or hormonal response. Electro-acupuncture is commonly used in pain management because of its powerful pain relieving properties.
